Discovering that Dom is not just a Pizzeria!

Dom Pizza Phratamnak is well known to many for its excellent pizzas and has been awarded Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice award for the past 4 years. So we were delighted to attend their recent wine dinner and discover that they now have so very much more to offer.

Walking through the ever-popular alfresco area with a busy chef expertly preparing his pizzas, we entered Dom Gourmet Delicatessen. Inside we were greeted by the most amazing selection of wines, charcuterie and cheeses. Both imported and locally made produce is available here with choices to suit every budget. There is even a fantastic selection of imported purees, spices, dry pasta and condiments everything you need if you want to try to recreate some of the amazing dishes from Dom in your own kitchen. However, we were not here to do that. We were here to sample some fine dining.

In conjunction with Vines to Vino, Dom had put forward an excellent evening’s meal to be enjoyed in comfortable air-conditioned surroundings. On arrival, the diners were treated to four cheese pizza and bruschetta tasters accompanying Vines to Vino’s popular Cuvee Sparkling Chardonnay. Then a delicious starter of steamed prawns on a bed of smashed avocado. The avocados were perfect in consistency neither too hard nor too mushy, paired nicely with M.Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes du Rhône, a fresh, flowery white.

Then we were onto the 3 reds portion of the evening with the first a subtle fruity Pinot Noir “Volcanes de Chile Reserva” enjoyed with an extremely generous antipasto platter. This was soon followed by a Chianti from Toscana “Astrale Riserva” and a deliciously tender lamb shank that had been dipped in herbs and spices and then roasted in olive oil. Most pleasing to see sweet potatoes used in this dish along with a rich red-wine sauce.

Having suitably flexed our taste buds we were then onto the star of the wine show: Astrale Rosso Primitivo Montepulciano. A full-bodied elegant red with a pleasant lingering flavour it worked extremely well as an accompaniment to Dom’s 4 cheese selection – a great advertisement for the Gourmet Deli.

When we thought we couldn’t manage another thing there was a Tiramisu just too good to resist. Wonderfully soaked and powdered with a vanilla ice-cream accompaniment it was a very satisfying end to a lovely dinner with a fine “Quinta Do Portal Fine Ruby Porto”.

If the object of the exercise was to tempt us into coming back to sample more of Dom’s fine dining then it most certainly worked. We shall definitely be returning – and not just for pizza!
